> Internet Explorer 1, Netscape 0
Netscape gets the final nail in the coffin bringing the browser war between Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer to a close. Netscape owner, AOL Time Warner, received a payment of $750 million bucks from Microsoft who admitted to using its monopoly to eliminate Netscape. In return, AOLTM dropped the suit and received royalty-free use of IE through to the end of 2010.
Developers all around the world are throwing their hands up in joy. Designing for the Web just got a whole lot easier, now that you don't have multiple browsers to accommodate. Sure there are still a few rebel users out there trying to fight off the inevitable, but they currently account for approximately 1% of the population. Considering the drop of users from 25% two years ago and 50% two years before that... well you get the point. Now developers can take advantage of all the features a single browser has to offer. Powerful enterprise Web applications will become more affordable, such as content management tools, that allow the client complete control over their own content.
What I don't think a lot of regular folk have realized is that Microsoft just took a giant leap forward in being in full control of this online world and virtually every user on the planet. Just watch and see, Google, our beloved search engine will be next to go. In hindsight, $750 million will have been a small price to pay.
